Literary Speculation

I found a lot of this week's reading to be very bizarre. Watching Videodrome also turned out to be way more out there than I ever expected. Something I noticed in the stories, especially in "Rachel in Love," was that questioning what it means to be human seems to be a common theme. This theme had come up before in Horror as well as in other Science Fiction works. It was also a big part of Videodrome, too. Being a species with as much resources as we have we tend to push the limits of what we can accomplish and some of those things involving altering ourselves. "Rachel in Love" questioned if having the memory and thinking pattern of a human was enough to make you so, but ultimately in the story it turned out to not be enough. Videodrome on the other hand was more about asking at what point will we be less human and more of the technology that we've created. There are lots of ways to ask the question of what it means to be human and telling stories about pushing the limits helps us reflect on what might be "going too far."
