Diverse Position Science Fiction

Knowing Avatar was going to be the video for class I thought this type of science fiction was going to have a bit of a lighter side to it. However, reading Bloodchild really took that notion away fast. The story was just a bit sickening really. It was a little difficult to pick up on all the details of this fictional world, but the idea that humans fled to this other world and then paired up with these odd aliens just seemed so startling. Especially reading about what exactly the pairing up meant. It was mentioned in class that basically our natural reaction to contacting alien life would be to destroy it. I wonder if the fear for that comes from the idea of what integrating with them would really mean. We've seen in our history what happens when a more advanced group of people interacts with a primitive one. It has never ended well. This diverse position idea seems to try and make up think more about the benefits of it all more often. Unlike some other forms of science fiction the idea of this type has yet to become more of a reality. Except for really in the case where we look on it to reflect on how our society has acted towards our own kind. We hope for a brighter future with peace and it just seems a bit safer without thinking about an alien race that could swoop in and change everything.
